September 25, 2024
Bargaining updates header

The CEC has tabled comprehensive workload proposals grounded in the Flaherty Workload Task Force Report, faculty workload survey data, consultations with managers, CAAT-A demands,  and cost analysis.

Our proposals align with our duty to ensure the fiscal sustainability of the Ontario college system and our dedication to providing students with the world-class education and support they deserve. More information can be found in the CEC’s remarks at the table.

CEC Proposals Highlights

  • Modes of delivery added to the workload formula
  • Increased time for essay or project evaluation
  • Increased time for routine out-of-class assistance to individual students
  • Overtime pay provision for counsellors and librarians
  • Increased time for preparation and out-of-class assistance for hyflex course delivery
  • Increased pay for partial-loads assigned hyflex course delivery
  • Increased wages and benefits

Union Workload Demands

The workload demands the CAAT-A bargaining team tabled jeopardize both the Colleges’ ability to be financially responsible, but also students’ access to the education they deserve. The overall theme to the demands centers on professors spending less time in the classroom resulting in more than $1 Billion in new annual costs to the College sector. Examples include:

  • 8 weeks of self-directed non-teaching time
  • 4-hour reduction in weekly total workload hours
  • 50% increase in professional development days
  • Changes to SWF factors that would significantly reduce the number of courses and students a professor would be able to teach

These demands amount to less weekly teaching and a maximum of 27 weeks of available teaching time in a year. Less teaching time doesn’t improve student success.

Currently, the CEC and CAAT-A bargaining team continue to negotiate and hope for an on-time renewal collective agreement.

As we continue negotiations this month, a reminder that the Flaherty Workload Taskforce Report, all proposals, and all demands are published on the CEC website. Academic employees, management, students, and community members are encouraged to read both the CEC and Union proposals to get informed.
